Tips for getting used to wearing dentures
Do you have new dentures? Then the problems are already
known. The pain because a new prosthesis has to 'set,' eating baby food, not
being able to talk like you used to and being ashamed of that different 'look.'
You may even think about living as a hermit for a while. Then take comfort. You
can get used to everything. Even dentures!
Before that, you have to get used to the new prosthesis.
That's quite a job. And maybe even a traumatic experience that you would rather
not think about later. The dentist has probably overloaded you with advice,
such as 'persevere,' 'willpower,' and 'persistence.' Well… if your dentures
hurt so much at the beginning that you preferably want to give them a swipe
toward the other corner of the room. Getting used to that strange round mouth
full of artificial teeth is physically and mentally the most difficult.
Mirror
To get used to your own reflection, it is wise to regularly
stand in front of the mirror. What is especially striking, in the beginning, is
that your mouth and cheeks look very different than they used to. You may think
something has gone wrong, that the dentist has measured too large a tooth. That
is not true. Your mouth will be properly filled again in a while. At least
once, the swollen gums have shrunk.
As difficult as it may seem, you will really have to get
used to your new dentures. And that happens. If you just hold on. Among other
things, it is a matter of often standing in front of the mirror and making
faces. Smile, look grumpy, sad, stern and happy. Get used to your face and your
facial expressions. That gives confidence!
Practice
Talking is also terrible in the beginning. So practice with
your teeth. Read aloud, say the alphabet, and count to one hundred. Listen to
yourself and correct your articulation, pronunciation and hissing. Practice the
vowels and consonants. Ultimately, your dentures will do what you want them to
do. If you just keep going! Look at the millions of people who have gone before
you. Also, think of the wonderful time ahead of you and the benefits of having
dentures: no more toothache and very low or no dental bills!
